Brilliant MFA cruise to a 5-1 victory in their first game of the season
On Wednesday 19th September, Macclesfield Football Academy (MFA) locked horns with The Football College, Bury FC in their first league game in the English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) North West League, although Storm Ali tried his best to prevent that!
After losing their friendly last week v Wilmslow High School (0-2) MFA started off the game at a fast tempo for with chances aplenty for Sam Box, Sam Jordan and Callum Berry, but none of these chances would be taken, and the game was somehow 0-0 after 10 minutes.
It was still all MFA, but after 20 minutes, Bury went on the counter-attack, a good through ball played by their midfielder sent away their striker who outpaced Kanta Sibbett and fired home past Haigh. 0-1.
MFA responded well and was now pushing for their first goal that would draw things level, again, MFA had chances aplenty and after 38 minutes that crucial moment came in the game. A great corner in from Sam Box ricocheted off a few Bury players and a very rare moment for James Chadwick as he half-volleyed home on his left foot. 1-1
Half Time: 1-1. At halftime manager, Kyle Lord reiterated the importance in taking their chances and that they had learnt a harsh lesson in football after dominating all aspects of play.
The second half started off fairly evenly, and Bury started to test Joseph Haigh’s goal more while MFA was still trying to create more chances. But that goal to put them ahead came in the 49th minute when Sam Box raced through from a Luigi Pinto through ball and delicately chipped the ball into the net, although it was very close to being blown out of the goal by the relentless wind! 2-1.
Sam Box doubled his tally four minutes later with a great team goal, Callum Berry picked up the ball on the halfway line after linking up with substitute Tom Mauro and Berry played through Box to round the keeper and walk the ball home. 3-1, 53 minutes played.
MFA kept pushing to try and kill the game off with lots and lots of chances coming their way now. But 19 minutes into the second half, Sam Jordan scored his first of the season. A corner came in from Tom Kerr, and the ball rebounded out to Jordan about 25 yards out and with some quick feet and three Bury players surrounding him, found some spaced and whipped the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net. A brilliant finish to put MFA 4-1 ahead after 64 minutes.
The fifth goal came through substitute Adam Robinson, who opened his MFA campaign with a goal. Some great work from Sam Jordan in the middle of the pitch set through Tom Mauro whose shot was saved by the goalkeeper and fell to Robinson who tapped home with 15 minutes to play. 5-1 after 75 minutes. MFA saw out the game with no real issue and stayed disciplined throughout. A professional and ruthless display from the lads.

Man of the Match: A brilliant display from Sam Box earnt him the man of the match award, on any other day he could have had a hat-trick but his early second-half brace set MFA well on their way to victory.
Manager Kyle Lord said: “It was a great performance today; there was some quality football on display that can be seen with Sam Jordan’s great solo goal. It’s great to get a win and the lads deserve a lot of credit for the way they performed today. It’s 3 points on the board in a league that we want to win.”
