MFA maintain their unbeaten start with a deserved victory in the Men’s Knockout Trophy

A Joe Cobey double, one Thierry Henry-esque goal, secured MFA’s place in the next round of the Men’s Knockout Trophy after a victory over Moorland Independent School, Clitheroe.

From minute one MFA looked to dominate our opponents as a great reverse ball by Sam Jordan sent through Sam Box who could only hit his shot at the goalkeeper. The next 15 minutes would see MFA hit the bar twice through Alfie Tyldesley’s powerful drive and a Joe Cobey header and the Moorland keeper being called into action an awful lot. Alec Terry a bystander during the first 20 minutes.

The next 5 minutes would see Moorland get back into the game more and start to test Alec Terry – making his first start of the season – through a powerful number 10 and a skilful number 7. But this momentum was short-lived as Joe Cobey produced a piece of brilliance. A ball played into him by Luke Boyle was then flicked up and volleyed into the net after 25 minutes to put MFA 1-0 up. Bringing flashbacks of Henry’s goal v Manchester United in October 2000. 1-0 MFA.

MFA remained in cruise control until the 33rd minute. A moment of madness as the number 7 attempted a cross and the ball flew over Alec Terry’s head and into the top corner. Fluke or not. 1-1.

More chances came for both Moorland and MFA but they were unable to convert. Half Time. 1-1.

Second half restarted the same as the first with MFA creating a lot of chances. Three more attempts hit the crossbar and the Moorland goalkeeper pulling off some great saves. Moorland, did, however, have a few minute spells of their own with some good pressure and they created a lot of chances that were well matched by the MFA centre backs Kanta and Colin.

12 minutes into the second half and MFA restored their lead. Joe Cobey who, again, it was who got the goal. Sam Jordan’s great through ball set Cobey through whose low driven shot fizzed through the keeper’s legs into the bottom corner. 2-1 MFA.

The remaining half hour was very even as Moorland looked to get back into the game. Their number 10 and number 7 were causing problems while the number 5 was playing well at centre back. MFA defended well throughout with some great defending from Tom Kerr keeping the lead in tact.

The result remained as MFA started to manage the game well, Pinto, Lisle and Robinson all came on for a cramped up Sibbett, a magnificent Sam Box and a consistent Callum Berry.

Joe Cobey – 25′ 57′

Terry, Chadwick, Kerr, Sibbett (Lisle 76′), Midgley (c), Boyle, Tyldesley, Berry (Pinto 70′), Jordan, Box (Robinson 83′), Cobey

Man of the Match: Joe Cobey – back in the squad from injury and was like a breathe of fresh air with his pace, power and knack of scoring being welcomed back into the squad. A great performance with two very good goals.

Special mentions to, Joe Cobey and Sam Box who came on as substitutes in MTFC’s first team game v Cheadle Heath Nomads, Cobey winning and converting a penalty in a convincing 3-0 win. And Sam Jordan who went with the reserves to Morecambe in the central league cup, unfortunately, Sam didn’t get on but was great to gain the experience.

Manager Kyle Lord said: “It’s a fantastic performance today to beat a team who also came into this unbeaten. I’m really happy for the lads, and they thoroughly deserved to win the game. The goal from Joe was something special, and it was great having him back in the squad, I think the lads were pleased to have him back too”.
