Macclesfield Town U19 play out a EFL CEFA Cup Thriller against Birmingham City FC
Macclesfield Town under 19s A team travelled down to face Birmingham City’s under 19s A team this afternoon, as the two sides contested an EFL CEFA Cup thriller.
The Silkmen youngsters looked to continue their fine start to the season as the travelled to the Trillion Trophy Training Centre to face one of the competitions toughest challenges and previous multiple winners.
Paul McGuire’s side got of to the best possible start when the lethal frontman Tyler James latched onto a Josh Clegg through ball and lobbed the goalkeeper to make it 1-0 to The Silkmen.
The hosts grew into the game and would equalise with a carbon copy of our goal, when a long ball over the top was latched onto after a weak header from Tyler Beck allowed the Birmingham City striker to chip goalkeeper Stockton to level the score.
The hosts were getting on top by this point, as the strong and well organised Birmingham City outfit moved the ball quickly and became a real threat on the Silkmen goal.
The home side took a somewhat dubious lead, after a soft penalty decision was awarded by the referee. After lengthy consultation with the linesman, the spot kick was given, with the ball being slammed past Stockton to put the home side ahead at the break.
After a stern but inspiring half-time team talk, the Silkmen youngsters really took the game to their hosts.
Macc created a string of chances early in the second half as the pressure begin to tell. This pressure was ultimately rewarded when Trevor Kyobe was brought down in the box resulting in a clear penalty kick. The penalty was slotted away nicely by the inform frontman Tyler James to level the scores once more.
As the game progressed there was good play from both teams with chances created at both ends.
Against the run of play the host took a late lead, when Jamie Osipitan was adjudged to have fouled the Birmingham left winger.
The ball was swung in with pace and power right between the posts and was ultimately turned in right on the goal-line for the host to take a dramatic lead.
But the drama didn’t finish there.
Going into injury time The Silkmen pushed forward in search of a vital equaliser and this eventually came with the last throw of the dice.
In the 94th minutue, Jamie Osipitan launched in a long throw which was flicked on at the near post by Tyler Beck and converted powerfully from close range by the lethal Tyler James.
This saw James record his third hat-trick in five games and his eleventh goal in the opening five fixtures.
Cue wild scenes as the Silkmen youngsters grabbed what proved to be a deserved point from this crucial cup fixture.
With the Silkmen now on four points in the group, positive results in the remaining two fixtures against Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United respectively, should see them through to the knockout stages.
Many of the Silkmen u19 ‘A’ squad will now look to face St Helens Town under 21s on Sunday in the Northwest u21 Development League, as they prepare for the visit of Category 2 Academy Crewe Alexandra next Thursday in the FA Youth Cup.
The game will be played at the Moss Rose on 31st October with a 19:30 kick-off.
