Match Preview: St Helens Town U21 vs Macclesfield Town U21

After a promising start to this season’s North West Development League, the Silkmen’s u21 squad turn their attention to St Helen’s Town on Sunday, as they look to continue an exciting run of early-season form.

Sunday’s trip to St Helens follows a series of respectable results for Paul McGuire’s side –  leaving them third in the league after just two games played.

Opening day’s draw away at St Michaels, followed by a dramatic two-goals in two-minutes turnaround against Stockport Town last weekend will do wonders to fill the squad with confidence going into the game.

Last weekend’s comeback victory, sealed by Andi Kideri’s scintillating solo effort, was the Silkmen’s first win of the season. Prior to the winning goal, a fantastic free-kick equaliser by midfielder Lamin Jange sparked high-praise from manager McGuire, saying:

“He was quality. The best player on the pitch by a mile. If we can keep hold of Lamin for a few more games hopefully we can get a few more points on the board.”

Despite St Helens poor start to the season, leaving them rock bottom after 2 matches played with a goal difference of -7, the hosts will be fighting for their first three points of the season. Consecutive 1-5 and 2-5 home defeats to Irlam and St Michaels leave them in a precarious position – one that the Silkmen must take advantage of in order to continue the positive start made.

Last season’s encounter saw the Silkmen fight back twice en-route to a 2-2 draw, and u21 manager Paul McGuire is expecting much of the same as he and the team look to rise even further up the table.

Speaking after last week’s victory over Stockport, McGuire made his thoughts on this weekend’s encounter clear.

He said:

“I’m expecting a tough game, with a tough battle. We’re living day-to-day at the moment, as a club and as an academy – but we are very much looking forward to being back on the pitch in blue white and blue next Sunday – and hopefully,  another three points.”

Sunday’s Premier Division game will take place at St Helens Town FC, Ruskin Drive, Denton’s Green.

Kick-off 1 pm.
