Brilliant B Boys Beat Preston.
On a cold Wednesday afternoon at Egerton Youth Club, the youth development squad ‘B’ boys took on a Preston North End side in their second Group C game in the Northern Section of the Cup.
After winning 4-1 away to Aston Villa in the previous cup game, the lads were in high spirits of getting a good result against a resilient Preston North End side. A brace each from Harry Massey and Joao Soares and a single goal from Connor Austin secured the 5-1 victory.
It took just the 4 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, fresh from playing in the FA Youth Cup against Crewe Alexandra and being on the bench in the FA Cup First Round Proper on Sunday against Kingstonian, Connor Austin – who was made captain for the fixture – scored the goal after a shot from Kyah Cahill was parried out by the goalkeeper into the path of Austin who coolly placed a left footed shot from 10 yards out into the bottom corner.
After 20 minutes, Preston were lucky to not have a man sent off, as their number 6 went for a high ball with his feet and caught goalscorer Austin in the face causing him to have treatment. The referee only deemed the tackle to be a yellow card.
The game was mostly played in the half of Preston North End as Macclesfield would keep trying to get the second goal they craved. The Preston goalkeeper, pulled off save after save to keep the scoreline at 1-0, but it was on the stroke of half time when that second goal game. Man of the Match, Joao Soares got his first of the game with a great effort from 25 yards out which looped over the goalkeeper, who was blinded by the autumnal sun
The first 15 minutes of the second half saw 4 goals scored. The lilywhites, playing in their yellow away strip would score first. A long ball from kick off saw their Number 9 dribble the ball past Connor Austin, and although the ball seemingly go out of play Austin inadvertently fouled the Preston man who stepped up and powered a penalty straight down the middle. The first thing goalkeeper Aum Patel had to do in this match was pick the ball up out of his goal. 2-1, 47 minutes played.
It was an immediate reaction from the silkmen who went up the other end and scored through Harry Massey’s first goal of the day. A shot from Ben Glendon was spilled by the goalkeeper and poked home by Massey after 50 minutes.
The fourth goal would come from Massey again as a great through ball from Joao Soares was latched onto by Massey, who made an excellent run from the left and rounded the goalkeeper and finished exquisitely.
Two minutes later the 5th goal came as Joao Soares got his second of the game. A cross in from Harry Massey found its way to Soares on the edge of the box and he rifled a shot into the top right corner with help from the underside of the bar to emphatically give Macclesfield a four goal lead.
The Silkmen would end the game with 10 men, as Denis Cheben was given his marching orders for what was seemingly for something he’d said in frustration of not being awarded a penalty after being pulled down in the box.
Full Time: Macclesfield Town 5-1 Preston North End
Man of the Match: Joao Soares – A brilliant performance at Right-Back and two well taken goals with an excellent assist gave “John” the man of the match award.
Team: Patel, Soares, Ouattara, Wilson, Murphy, Austin ©, Glendon (F.Johnson), Robertson (Draysey), Cahill (Cheben), Ghazaoui, Massey (Cooper).
Manager Kyle Lord said: “It was a great performance overall today, I don’t think Aum had to make a save which shows how much we dominated that fixture. I think the aim for us now is to try and get that clean sheet in the next games as our performances are warranting one. It’s two out of two now in the Cup as we are looking to get through into the knockout stages, but our attention now turns to next week when we face Stoke City in league action”.
