Macclesfield Town EDS travel to Cheshire Premier Division side Poynton FC in the Academies opening pre-season game

On Saturday Macclesfield Town XI make the short 17.4 mile round trip to open their pre-season games against Cheshire Premier Division side Poynton FC

After a four-month absence, Macclesfield Town EDS  finally have the opportunity to get back playing football. Their last game was way back on Wednesday 11th March and it was a tight affair away to Shrewsbury Town where the young Silkmen came out 3-2 victors after a last-minute penalty from Tyler James. 

Poynton, who play their trade in the Cheshire League last had a game back on Saturday 7th March at home to Billinge FC. It was the visitors who came away with all three points that day thanks to a Marios Avraam second-half goal. Before the enforced end to the season, Poynton occupied 9th place on 24 points, thirteen points off top spot with four games in hand. 

Opposition History

Poynton who were formed in 1893, was originally formed as Poynton Amateurs Football Club and a year later moved to their current home on London Road in Poynton. 

It wasn’t until 1971 that Poynton won their first trophy. In the 1970/71 season, Poynton was crowned Divison three champions of the Lancashire and Cheshire League. Five years later they have crowned champions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Division 2.  

Since the turn of the millennium, Poynton has had a successful last 20 years, winning 11 trophies in that time for the first team and reserve side, including winning the Stockport Senior Cup three times in five seasons.

Ahead of the game, academy coach Daniel Whiting discussed his excitement of getting back to a sense of normality with the game on Saturday.  

“I can’t wait to get back into it, seeing the lads back playing has sent a real feel good factor around the academy. I’ve had parents chatting to me about how excited they are to see their Son back playing football” Whiting went on to say, “Poynton will provide us with a tough physical test which will be good for the lads. We have some external lads playing like Callum Knight and Amadou Doumbouya which will supplement the team well’
